This isn’t about becoming a different person; it’s about becoming you again.

Who are you, Cookie Taylor?

Well, I’m a bit of a screw-up on paper, to be honest, but if there’s one thing I’m good at, it’s getting back up when I’m knocked down.

In short, I grew up in what I thought was a healthy, balanced family – but emotionally there was a lot of underlying neglect and toxicity that only now, in my 50’s, do I understand.

It left me woefully ill-equipped for the ‘real world’ and I tumbled off the rails at 16. Roll on decades later and, behind the laughter and smiles, I’ve fought an ongoing battle with depression, PTSD, anxiety, nervous breakdowns, agoraphobia, addiction and obesity.

It took me decades to heal myself of those things, with many relapses along the way – even now – so I know what it takes to change and how challenging it can be to maintain those changes. Luckily I have a genuine lust for life, look on the bright side and enjoy working towards my goals (even if I never achieve them!).

You can read my story in more detail here.

What made you create The 40+ Collective?

I’ve found that since hitting middle age, life has presented new challenges I never thought I’d have to face and I lost myself somewhere along the way.

It’s taken a supreme effort to drag myself out of depression and breakdowns, overcome low self-esteem and actually see a bright future again – so I want to help others, who may be going through similar struggles.

Middle age can hit hard: your looks have started to sag, you’re no longer the centre of attention, you’ve lived most of your dreams and you’ve gradually lost touch with who you are. You’ve probably put on a few pounds, have got progressively worse at doing hair and makeup and, as for clothes … total disaster. You’ve gradually lost your way and it can be a lonely, frustrating path back to you, when you finally decide to get a grip.

So my aim is to create a friendly, welcoming place where we get a grip together, supporting each other at whatever stage we find ourselves.

Why is The 40+ Collective only for women?

I’ve had various YouTube channels in my time and each one has seen women making up 95% of subscribers. Probably because I am one but also because I was fat, talked about emotional issues, failed at pretty much all of my goals, and put myself down all the time. Plus I rarely revealed my cleavage.

Listen, I’m no feminist, I’m far from ‘woke’ with all its ‘toxic masculinity’ and ‘women are stronger’ claptrap and I’m probably a tad more comfortable around men with all their dangly bits and banter. But, because of my experience on YouTube and the fact that, as a woman, I know what women go through, I thought it logical to focus on us. Plus I find women to be more likely to share their stories, offer support to one another and open up about difficult issues, which I enjoy exploring.

If the odd man slips in, so to speak, that’s fine by me and I’m not about to kick him out if he prefers to be supported by us gals.
